Check Out These Amazing Outdoor Activities to Try When You Visit Ruidoso

For a picturesque vacation in the rugged Sierra Blanca Mountains, look no further than Ruidoso, New Mexico. Some call it an “enchanted mountain oasis” rich with history – a unique blend of Native American and Spanish cultures – and blessed with stunning natural scenery. It is the perfect location for a weekend getaway and serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring the rest of Southern New Mexico.

No matter what season you visit, there are activities for all members of the family. Here are some of the top outdoor activities in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

Hiking

Stretch your legs and explore the local mountain ranges. There are hikes for all ages and abilities. Whether you are looking for a rigorous multi-day backpacking trip or simply a short walk around the pond, Ruidoso has it all.

Lincoln National Forest is one point of interest for hikers. With more than 50 official day hikes, you could spend your entire vacation here and never explore them all. The park is a beautiful spot for wildlife, and there are a few trails where you are especially likely to catch sight of local critters like mule deer, porcupines, or foxes.

Perk Ridge Trail is only 4.8 miles and circles in a lightly trafficked loop. Because of its relative isolation, it makes a good hiding place for wildlife. Dogs and horses are also allowed. Then there’s Cedar Creek Trail, which stretches for 3.6 miles and is primarily used for hiking. For a river’s view, you can explore the 11.5-mile South Fork of the Rio Bonito Trail. Even more impressive is the Willie White and Wills Canyon Loop Trail, which features a scenic waterfall.

Other popular routes include Osha Trail, Dog Canyon Trail, and Sierra Blanca, among others.

Only 11 minutes from Ruidoso’s city center is Grindstone Lake, which is still technically part of Lincoln National Forest. The Grindstone Lake Trail System includes an 18-mile multi-use looped trail system. This is the perfect location for a casual afternoon stroll with friends and family. It is heavily trafficked, so if you are less comfortable heading into the wilderness alone, this is a safe trail that still showcases rustic natural beauty.

Located just off Highway 48, Cedar Creek is another ideal hiking destination. This popular recreation area includes a picnic shelter and three group campsites. Even if you only visit for a day trip, hiking trails within the campground are accessible during spring through fall.

Biking

If you prefer to get around on two wheels rather than two legs, there is a place for you in Ruidoso. Hikers aren’t the only ones who get to enjoy New Mexico’s backwoods in the summer!

One popular route in Lincoln National Forest is 12 Hours in the Wild West, a race loop that extends nearly 12 miles and reaches almost 8000 feet in elevation. It passes around Lake Grindstone, as does the popular Grindstone Lake Trail Extended, another 12-mile loop around the lake. This trail also includes hikers and horseback riders, so it is not as ideal for racing as the prior loop. You’ll find all kinds of terrain: smooth and rough, rocks, plant roots, steep turns, flowing curves, uphill, and downhill. However, the entire loop is very rideable and doesn’t require you to push your bike at any point. Cedar Lake is another popular spot for bikers, with options like the T121 and T121A biking trails.

Horse Riding

Any animal lovers in the family will delight at the chance to experience Ruidoso on horseback! If you’re not an experienced rider but would like to learn, Grindstone Stables offers guided tours through the forests above Grindstone Lake. In the rest of Lincoln National Forest, you can experience the rugged backcountry beauty on horseback. There is a long list of trails that permit horses, which you can find on the official Ruidoso website.
