The International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell is a must-visit attraction during your Ruidoso day trip. White Sands National Park

Hot Springs of Truth or Consequences

Truth or Consequences is home to ancient hot springs that have been a source of rejuvenation for centuries. These thermal waters flow from a rift along the Rio Grande, offering temperatures ranging from 98 to 115 degrees and containing 38 different minerals. 

What sets them apart is their lack of odor and the presence of chloride, a natural germ killer. The town’s history as a health center dates back to the early 20th century when visitors flocked here for the “21-day soak” regimen, believed to cure various ailments. Today, Truth or Consequences maintains its heritage with charmingly restored accommodations and a range of healing treatments.

Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway

The Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway, an 84-mile stretch of highway, weaves through captivating art galleries, historic sites, museums, and stunning scenery. Named after the legendary Wild West outlaw, Billy the Kid, this trail also pays homage to other iconic figures like Smokey Bear. Established in 1998, it offers a 2+ hour journey exploring various sites.

One notable stop is Lincoln, where the infamous Lincoln County War unfolded, and Billy the Kid made his daring escape from the Lincoln County Courthouse. This historic site preserves the town’s 1870s and 1880s ambiance, featuring buildings like the Old Lincoln County Courthouse and Tunstall Store Museum.

Smokey Bear Historical Park

Smokey Bear Historical Park, founded in 1976, pays tribute to Smokey Bear, Capitan’s famous resident. Smokey’s story began when he was found orphaned with burned paws after a wildfire. He became a symbol for forest fire prevention and spent 26 years at Washington, D.C.’s National Zoo. Upon his passing, he was laid to rest in Capitan, creating a special site within the park.

The park features exhibits on forest health, wildfires, fire ecology, and wildfire prevention in the visitor center. Outdoors, visitors can visit Smokey Bear’s resting place, explore natural exhibits, and enjoy educational programs in the outdoor amphitheater. 

Junior Ranger and Little Ranger programs engage young visitors, making learning fun. Operated by the New Mexico Forestry Division’s Capitan District since 1992, the park continues to honor Smokey’s legacy.

White Oaks Ghost Town

Located three miles north of Carrizozo on US Hwy 54, White Oaks Ghost Town offers a unique frontier experience. Unlike typical New Mexico adobe towns, White Oaks exudes a Wild West cowboy vibe with pitched roofs and a history tied to gold discovery. 

Originally a wild west cattle community, White Oaks transformed when gold was found, leading to an influx of Eastern influences and lawyers. Victorian-style homes like the Hoyle House, complete with a “widow’s walk” on the roof, became prominent. 

At its peak, it was New Mexico’s second-largest city, surpassed only by Santa Fe. Visitors can explore historic buildings, the Cedarvale cemetery, and the iconic No Scum Allowed Saloon, recognized by American Cowboy Magazine as one of the “Best Cowboy Bars in the West.”
