Grindstone Lake

Rainbow trout in a western waterway

Beautiful Grindstone Lake offers phenomenal fishing for any aspiring angler. You can fish from your boat or from the sturdy pier, which is wheelchair accessible. The lake is one of two in the area where you can launch a non-motorized boat, and the boat ramp makes it easy to do so.

Some of the most commonly caught species include rainbow trout, bluegill, smallmouth bass, and channel catfish.

Surrounded by a multi-use 18-mile-long  trail system, Grindstone Lake offers activities like mountain biking and hiking trails near Ruidoso for the non-anglers in your family to enjoy, too. Parking and restrooms are available.

Alto Lake

Serene Alto Lake is easily accessible and is regularly stocked with rainbow trout, bluegill, and smallmouth bass for your fishing fun. The lake is one of two in the area where you are permitted to launch your non-motorized boats.

When you’re ready for a break from fishing, the lake offers picnic tables and shelters along the lake shore for you to use (first come, first served). A scenic 0.5-mile-long trail encircles the lake, and other hiking trails are easy to access. Parking and restrooms are also available.

Bonito Lake

Northwest of Ruidoso, New Mexico, in the Sierra Blanca mountains you’ll find the alpine reservoir known as Bonito Lake. Although it is surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest, which is a well-liked spot for camping and fishing, this area is not a part of the forest. With plenty of things to do in Ruidoso and the surrounding area, you’re sure to find the perfect adventure for you and your family when visiting Bonito Lake!

The city of Alamogordo in New Mexico currently owns it and uses it as its main water supply. The lake, which is home to a large population of rainbow trout, has a cold temperature year-round due to its high altitude. Numerous campgrounds with hiking trails and streams can be found near the lake.

Please note that The lightning-caused Little Bear Fire started on June 4, 2012, and was declared contained on July 30, 2012. The fire burned 44,330 acres and 254 buildings. No lives were lost in the Little Bear Fire. It is expected to open recreationally again by 2024.
