If you’re looking for a more heart-pumping activity, you’re likely to come across the concept of disc golf in Ruidoso.

But how do you choose the ideal Ruidoso disc golf spot? Or how do you find Ruidoso outdoor activities in general? We’re here to help.

What is Disc Golf?

This game aims to throw a disc at a target while standing from a determined distance (which can vary based on your skill level and progress and if other players are involved). They call this, as such, a “flying disc sport.” You will find that the disc used is typically made out of polypropylene plastic material, which is very lightweight and easy to pick up or throw around.

Forty recorded countries are playing this trendy game today, and that number grows annually. The game was first invented over a century ago, originating in Canada. It’s still heavily prevalent there as well in the US. Finland holds quite an active participant base in this sport, even professionally. You may also watch disc golf live streaming events, solo competitions, regional college tournaments, and more on several local and cable TV channels.

Disc golf typically involves 9-18 holes on the course. The goal of the game is to get your frisbee to the hole in the least amount of throws compared to your friends. It’s a matter of practice, accuracy, perfect timing, and luck. Will you emerge victorious?

Is Disc Golf for All Ages?

The neat thing about this game is that it’s made for people of all ages, skill levels, sporting preferences, and more. Anyone of any age can play! Disc golf is a great way to spend some time outdoors with your family while incorporating some exercise!

Grindstone Lake Disc Golf Course

When you’re ready to venture out of your Ruidoso vacation rental, check out the course at Grindstone Lake! As one of the most used and first-chosen courses, this one offers up to 27 holes. That gives you plenty of playing time, not to mention shots to take. So take your time, pick your angles, and make it happen. Starting in 2006, this place is now open year-round, so come in Tuesday or Thursday and play with a friend or even with a group (mini-tournament style). This 81-par player’s arena lets you tee off by flipping the disc (per tradition in most places). Have at it!

Wingfield Park Disc Golf Course

A superb choice for outdoor activities in Ruidoso, this 9-hole, 27-par course is ideal for newbies. If you have never played the sport in your life, this is the perfect setup and environment to get started in. No one will make fun of you for your lack of skill or knowledge of the rules, as that is why this course was designed in the first place! It’s meant to offer beginners 1553 feet of solid playing space and other like-minded newcomers a quick way to pick up some experience. It’s one of the newest courses in Ruidoso, too, started just in 2020. You’ll play on a rubber-grass mat.

Moon Mountain Disc Golf Course

Like with the prior courses listed, the hours on this one can vary. It’s best to look at the available schedule and set up a time to play (with friends or in a play group via tournament style). You get 18 holes here, and you tee off on the concrete. Like the others mentioned, this course is also open year-round. It’s designed for veteran players, so pick up some skill at the Wingfield course before heading out here. It was designed in 2019, and you’ll find its roughest, steepest hills right around holes 16-18 (where the game gets more challenging).

Ski Apache Disc Golf Course

This is a top choice for Ruidoso family activities involving golf. Same varying hours and per season, this golf course offers excellent signage and baskets from hole to hole. The people upkeeping this one do a great job as all is neat, orderly, and clean, from hole 1 to hole 18. There is plenty of fresh, natural grass throughout the course (as well as plenty of beautiful trees). They call this one a “pitch and putt” course, and people get straight to it when they arrive…. no fooling around. This course is usable by newbies, veterans, or players somewhere in between. It was built in 2020.
